Welcome to the forums!

Remove the paper backing! It is usually the eaisiest part to remove. Just get it wet [sponge, spray bottle, etc] and it will come off real easy with a broad knife. If you try to paint over it, the paper backing will start to disolve when you get it wet with paint You should also rinse the wall well to remove all/any adhesive residue.
