Window Seat Cushions: How long does it take?

Hello everyone,

I need to make about five window seat cushions for standard bay window/window seats. It's my first time and I would like to know approximately how long it takes to make one? (Or how long it should take.) Assuming I have all the materials, how much time am I looking at per cushion?

Sorry, this is new to me and I'm seeking advice.

Hi and welcome to the forum! That's impossible to answer since everyone works at different speeds. Also, one gets faster, the more you make. The only way to answer that, is to make one and time yourself, then figure the next four will be slightly faster.
If you're looking at how much to charge someone by basing on time, home furnishings should be charged by the inch, foot, yard, width, etc., because of the above reason. Charge a cushion by the inch or foot and charge extra for cordings, etc., then double your supply cost.

Making cushions is probably the hardest and most time consuming element in the upholstery business. I have been doing this work for almont 35 years. The best way to solve this problem is when cuting the pattern and sewing the first cushion keep your time and then charge accrodingly.

Keep in mind, that some fabrics will work better than others.

I still have to do the trial and error method with a lot of our jobs.

Hello All:

Some people were very helpful in giving me advice on what I needed to know about making window seat cushions. Now I have some other questions.

Here is my situation: I am, in fact, a screenwriter. The main character in our film is a woman who works with fabrics and has been asked to do a fairly important job, one that involves making window seat cushions (yes, this is legitimate; no, I am not making this up).

My question is: When you choose material for window seat cushions, what kind of material would you choose? Obviously you would have to choose something that would not fade in the sun, something that would be comfortable to the touch, and... I imagine... something that would not stain easily.
Especially the last part (don't worry, this is a family film, no blood or violence or sex); if somebody spilled wine or something on these type of cushions, would they be stained easily? Or... I remember we use to scotchguard things years ago, but... I'm out of touch with fabrics and materials, and I really need someone's advice.

First I have to say this is a DIY forum for real people that are wanting to actually make things themselves. It's too time consuming to answer make pretend questions. You probably should be paying a professional for advice since this is for a movie.
To answer your questions quickly, you can use Sunbrella, Upholstery or Drapery fabrics, all which are already treated. If a large stain gets on it that can't be removed easily, it would need to be recovered. High end means using expensive fabrics, and the work is done by a high-end workroom.
