I am looking at replacing our central Air / Gas furnace HVAC system with a two stage, variable speed HVAC system. Our house is 2 stories and I would like to be able to control the cooling and heating from both floors. Are there Thermorstats that work in conjuction with one another and do they "average" the temps between the 2 floors? | 01-06-09, 09:49 PM | | Topic Moderator | | Join Date: Sep 2001 Location: Rochester, Minnesota Posts: 12,924 | | | Yes, there are a couple of t-stat that Honeywell offers to do reading and avg out the temps. How big of a temp change between floors for you? You may find that a new two stage system with two stage t-stat will give you far better temps control. I have a split level home, and all of the room are with in 1˚ from one another on a single t-stat. __________________ -Jay If you can do it, We can help. | 01-06-09, 11:07 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: new jersey Posts: 27 | | | great idea then when the upstairs get too hot from the heat on below you can turn on the air conditioning at the same time.. | 01-07-09, 06:15 AM | | Topic Moderator | | Join Date: Sep 2001 Location: Rochester, Minnesota Posts: 12,924 | | Quote: Originally Posted by amaracan great idea then when the upstairs get too hot from the heat on below you can turn on the air conditioning at the same time.. | No, the t-stat will not turn on the A/C at the same time. If it get that hot up there in the winter, you have a duct design issues. __________________ -Jay If you can do it, We can help. | 01-07-09, 09:40 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 102 | | Quote: Originally Posted by Jay11J Yes, there are a couple of t-stat that Honeywell offers to do reading and avg out the temps. In the summer, the difference is more obvious. My reason for having two thermostats is more for convinience. It's nice not having to go up/down a flight of stairs to change the temp or to just turn on the fan. I program mine, and I don't even touch it unless I am home from work that day. With it being warmer upstairs in the summer, you have good attic vent? Returns up stairs? __________________ -Jay If you can do it, We can help. | 01-08-09, 10:44 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 102 | | Quote: Originally Posted by Jay11J Honeywell just came out with nice wireless remote control system if you need to have something upstairs. Returns up stairs? | I have 8 inches of insulation on the attic and an electric attic vent for summer, but when summer hits, the upstairs gets very hot very quickly and there is a bigger temp difference between the floors during those hot days. The ideal setup is to have two independant heating/cooling systems, each one doing one level, but that is costly and in some cases impossible because of the duct setup | 01-08-09, 11:39 AM | | Topic Moderator | | Join Date: Sep 2001 Location: Rochester, Minnesota Posts: 12,924 | | Quote: Originally Posted by joe1234 I have 8 inches of insulation on the attic | That's not enough. With that, you got about R-25 up there, and R-40 to R-44 is suggested in northern states. (around 12 to 14") as high as R-60 (19") __________________ -Jay If you can do it, We can help. | 01-08-09, 04:49 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 102 | | Quote: Originally Posted by Jay11J That's not enough. I live in southern California, not north. Still, the summers can get very hot very quickly. | 01-08-09, 05:21 PM | | Topic Moderator | | Join Date: Sep 2001 Location: Rochester, Minnesota Posts: 12,924 | | | I thought I read some where you were in New York.. My bad.. But yeah if you do add more, it will help cut down on the heat load in the summer. Even tho you do have a fan up there, it still what ever the temps is outside. __________________ -Jay If you can do it, We can help. | 01-08-09, 10:26 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Posts: 18 | | Quote: Originally Posted by Jay11J Honeywell just came out with nice wireless remote control system if you need to have something upstairs.
