Virus
It appears in the past 24hrs someone has attempt me to open a virus via e-mail, 1st one subject field was BLANK, 2nd one subject field was BOARD
I don't think I have pissed anyone off on here, but I've become a target.
Yes I never open a file attachment sent to me via e-mail. So if you are reading this, and your the one that is sending me this viris, guess what, get a life, I'm not that stupid.
Questions?
How can I find the true source of the senders address if it comes back is non-deliverable in a reply to the sender?
How does one send a message and block there true e-mail source?
Thanks Ron

Spoofed e-mail addresses can't really be traced unless the hacker is dumb enough to leave the original header in place. As for blocking, that is something that can only take place at the mail server level. You'll need to contact your ISP or Lan manager for help with that.

Worm???
This is Marturo, and I got to this post by clicking onto, next thread on my empty post ISA I/O printer card. I sent three questions about the ISA P/C printer card one landed in plumbing and one in home repair but it seems an incomplete version also was posted on computers. I sent a half hearted one as a test and Michael answered that message. Well to make a long story short. Why does this thread lead here from that incomplete post on Computers. I was sent an e-mail with BADTRANS, but EZ-ARMOR snuffed it out. No one I write to has told me that they got the worm. It does seem strange that for some reason the message that ended up on the COM board runs a thread to your post. I am not sure if any of this has to do with what Plumber2000 is going through but remember that the first time I tried to post, it landed on the plumbing board. Or maybe this is something I am not familiar with. I hope that this is all it is, and not some Cracker having fun at other peoples expense. PS: I still have a valid question about using an ISA I/O Printer card in a new machine. Marturo

The virus was the badtrans I had, but I was not infected, thank goodness.
Tell you what I just went out and bought 2 P4 1.7ghz 80gig 512 SDRAM putters for my business and these babys scream the new xp is a pain in the butt getting it find all the hardware, if anyone plans on the jump, do your self a favor, get all the updated drivers from the web 1st, or you will be fighting the tranfer of printers and stuff.
Other then that, networking the putters was a real pain also.

Sounds like screamers. Are you still getting e-mail with Badtrans attachments? I still wonder how if any way this worm made it from my computer to that botched atempet to post my first question on Computers that instead was posted on Plumbing. None of my 4 computers are with worm. I smashed Badtrans today for a customer, but he was not runing any Anti Virus Software. Well I am one of the 4 million people, who had @HOME and are going down tonight. Six to 10 days before I get my ADSL Modem from Bell South they tell me. Well I haven't gotten an answer on how the ISA I/O printer card will work in my modern puter, but now with no Internet I will just hook the ol ISA up and see if she will print. Hey what's the worst that can happen? Will I lose my ISP HaHa. See you on the twisted pair soon I hope. Isn't networking allways a pain at first, then after it works you forget about it. So Long for now, Marturo

These people that write these virus programs seem to have nothing better to do than to cause havoc for everyone else.
I just recently got hit with a virus that came in on an email, it resent it everyone that had a email stored on my computer, and it took down the operating system enough that I had to format and reinstall. Have now put an anti-virus and firewall on the computer so hopefully it will catch it next time.
Here is a trick that may work on some worm viruses , havn't tried it yet but may work well for some viruses...
-----------------------------
Here is a simple trick to help defeat those Virus Worms that send themselves to everyone on you contact list.
Open your address book and click on “New Contact” just as if you are going to add a friend to your contact list. In the area where you enter the name enter: !000 (that is an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros. In the area for email address enter: WormAlert. On some computers you might have to put the email address as wormalert@000.com so the computer is trick into allowing you to put it in your address book.
This will place the entry with the bogus email address first in your contact list. As WormAlert is not a valid email address, when the worm tries to send itself to the contact it will fail. This does two things- first and most important it stops the worm at the first contact. Second you will get a notification of a failed email sent to “WormAlert” letting you know that you have been infected.
This sounds almost too simple but this information came from an IS Department who assures us that this really works.
Hopefully this will help stop the problem before it goes to far.

That trick is a hoax. The following is a link to one hoax site, there are many others. They all say it's a hoax and won't work.

Like I said I have never tested that theroy. The site you gave , I will read more on it as soon as I can. The trick will give you an undelivered message report or error message back, now that part should work for sure as any mail undeverable does get returned, rather it would stop viruses from sending email could as you imply very questionable, or even considered a hoax. I hope never to test the theroy one way or another. The best thing is to always have a good up to date anti-virus program running. Even with that there is no guantees these days, but it should catch most of them. There is so many variations of viruses out there, what works to stop one , may not stop 3 others.

i read the article and IF this is a hoax, then i would like to see it stay on the forum so other people would know too! I am really surprised if it is because I heard at least two people on other forums state how it works for them(dont see any sense in lying?)But like i said i never tried it! I guess we just have to stay alert to things that do work. Sorry about this Guys. TOM

Post Hoaxes?
The all time #1 best thing that my friend did for me as he was teaching me to use the internet, was to put a short cut on my desk top to Internet hoaxes & Urban legends. I can't count the number of whoppers and hoaxes that people send me. All of them are sent to warn or inform me and that's good, if it's true. Sadly the internet is rife with pin heads that have nothing better to do but send out crapola all over the net to just see how many will fall for it. It is my responsibility to separate fact from fiction. Now when I get some hoax or chain mail I look it up and if it is bogus, I send them back a link to one or two sites that track and warn people about what's real and what is not. The upside is, now those very same people are now looking it up before just passing it along. The internet is just like life, some of it is true and a whole lot of it is pure BULL. Surfer, beware when in doubt look it up and share the URLs to the sites that expose all the people to the truth. Marturo

Thank You Guys for the tip. I am going to create a shortcut too and that way be in the know faster! Thanks for the web sites too. I have Google toolbar on my screen at all times and its great. We have to protect each other when we can against these idiots that have nothing better to do than start trouble with Virus's!
