Mix some baking soda in warm water. Spray the mattress. You'll probably not get all the odor out since it has penetrated the entire matress.
The best thing to do is wrap the mattress in a plastic covering made for mattresses.

Check your yellow pages for flood/fire restoration companies. They should have the facility to remove the odour from the matterss. We have a special room that we would put the mattress into and treat it with ozone. Our cash and carry price for this would be $50. Results are 100% guaranteed.

Thanks Ted for your imput. I didn't know it was possible to treat a mattress like that. I get questions about this from time to time at my home shows. I'll pass the word.
If the cigarette smoke will be an ongoing problem then encasing the mattress would be the solution. Otherwise you would be treating it every few months.
Thanks again Ted for your insight!
