Craftsman Lawn Tractor/Steering
I have a model # 917.270821 Garden Tractor. Can anyone tell me who the vendor for Sears is under 917?
More importantly, the steering shaft has partially broken right where it enters the shaft support. I've tried to remove the steering shaft so I can replace it but it won't come out and I don't know what is holding it in or how to get it out. Can anyone tell me?
Thanks

Here is a diagram from Sears parts direct.[IMG][/IMG]
Hope this helps you. As you can see there is a bolt in the bottom of the shaft that holds it in place. Looks like you will need to remove the support to replace the shaft. Just a guess but the rider is probably made by MTD. The steering shaft assembly is $26 and the support shaft is $7 at searspartsdirect.com

The mower is made by AYP (American Yard Products). The bolt that is holding the shaft to the shaft support is a 3/8" head, and you can get it out with a 3/8" deep well 1/4" drive socket. I've never seen a shaft break at the support. Usually the support wears in an oval shape where the shaft goes into it, and walks back and forth, causing the shaft to move far enough away from the sector gear that it jumps teeth. Usually it's more noticeable when turning one direction than the other. Sometimes the shaft gear and sector gear have stripped so many times that they must also be replaced. Also, many times the part (looks like maybe #66 in the above diagram) needs to be replaced if it is loose on the sector shaft or in the bracket it fits in.
You'll have to remove the drag link, the 4 bolts holding what looks like part #29 to the frame, then remove the C clip from the end of the shaft and slide the shaft out of the assembly. This will allow you access to the bolt holding the shaft support onto the shaft. You may find it easier to remove the steering wheel and the entire steering sector from the mower to work on it. Especially during reassembly, as the sector gear only goes onto the shaft one way...there is a notched spline that you must line up to get it back together timed correctly. You may find it easier to purchase and replace the whole assembly and not have to worry with it.
