New 220Vac Dryer Receptacle

New 220Vac Dryer Receptacle
I need to install a new dryer receptacle for a new dryer. I plan to use 10-3 with ground. It's about 10' to the panel/ There are no spaces on the 100 amp panel, so I plan to use 2 double breakers to free up a space for the new 30A double width breaker.
I just got back from the "big-box" store. I looked at the dryer surface mount receptacle. It had three screw type terminals. I think they are for the black, red and white. There was no apparant place to connect the bare ground wire. Is this typical? Am I supposed to use a 4 prong plug? The one I was looking at had three slots in the face for the cord.
Thanks

According to current code... You may NOT use the 3 wire receptical. It must be 4 -wire. You do have the correct wire 10/3.
In the panel (depending on the mfgr.) you will need 2- twin breakers (these are half size with 2-ckts available).
These however only come in same sizes 20/20....15/15 etc.
You may have to shuffle some ckts to make them match and free up the spaces. DO NOT under/over size any existing ckts..
This could cause big problems.
Please look at the panel, get a game plan, then explain in DETAIL what you see, and I'm sure the pros' here can guide you.

Take this receptical back and get a four prong receptical. The old, ungrounded, three prong recepticals are only sold today to repair existing circuits. They are not for use on a new dryer circuit.
If your dryer has the old three prong plug, replace the cord with a new cord that has a four prong plug. This will require consulting the manual for the dryer to determine how to properly separate the neutral to chassis bond used to "ground" the dryer in it's old configuration.
BTW: On the twin (aka tandem) breakers, some manufacturers do make 15-20 combo breakers. Siemens is one such manufacturer (see the Q1520 breaker). Of course, this only does you some good if the manufacturer of YOUR panel box makes such a breaker, as you need to use breakers that are listed or classified for the panel.
