Incorporating trees into a fence...
I know, it's usually not a good idea. But we live on a very narrow lot with a 2-car garage on it, and a tree grows on the property line opposite the side of the garage. Quite literally, if I maneuver the fence around the tree I would probably lose 5 feet (out of 15) of my yard, plus it would look ridiculous.
We want to install a wood-panel stockade-type fence. The purpose is to keep our dog in, and other dogs (and skunks) out. Ideally, I could build right up to the trunk of the tree, then continue on the other side.
The only alternative that I've been able to think of has been to build up to about 12 inches of the base of the tree on either side, then use flexible plastic fencing to go around the tree. But I'd prefer to put the wood fence right up to the trunk.
Any ideas?

More Info Please
I also have the same problem with a large tree growing right in the middle of the fence line. The old wooden privacy picket fence there now has bent and cracked as the tree grew. I want to install a new wooden stockade fence and am thinking about replacing the wooden posts with the metal posts. The only thing I'm not sure of is how to build the fence around the tree trunk. Could you eleborate on the cantilever ideal you mentioned?

What Chris is suggesting is that you set the post "as close to the tree as possible" -- a foot or 18" away from the tree would be my suggestion -- then run the panel past the post towards the tree. I would leave an inch gap between the panel and the tree. The tree IS going to get bigger, and at some point you will have to cut the panel backaway from the tree as it grows.
