Painting fireplace brick
I did a search but couldn't find anything on the subject. We have cleaned the outter brick. I needed plus there was some soot stains above the opening. Grout cleaner seemed to work the best. My question is: we want to paint the inside section and put in gas logs. We were over at a friends house last night that was built last year and has a off white or cream color inside the fire place. Is this a special paint used on the brick or is it the color of those bricks and ours is just covered with soot. If that is not an option. I guess we will have to try and paint it black. My first idea was to use black engine paint. Is there a special paint and does it come in different colors? Any ideas or pointers would be greatly appricated!!

Hello
You can clean and paint the brick with high heat paint for stoves..
but it will take away from the 'real look' of a wood fire if you do.... with the Gas logs burning in the old used fire place it can look like the real thing....that is what I have done and every one likes it...Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the input. We have thought about that too. The look of the real fire. We are leaning towards painting though. We have redone the entire inside of our house, gutted the kitchen, painted every surface, replaced all of the flooring, faucets, plugs, switches, light fixtures, everything and the fire place is the last item. We live in Houston, so it is not like we are going to have a fire going much of the year. With the rest of the house looking new, we kind of want the fireplace to look new as well. It appears the inside bricks were whitesh-yellow to start. So maybe they will have that color. Also you may want to check and see if you can get some of the fake black ashes to go with your logs. I really gives a nice real look to the gas fire.
Thanks again,
Rob

Here is the finished fire place. Zep grout cleaner works really well and make sure you have a spray bottle of water! The bricks are a lot cleaner and darker than before. We ended up painting the inside with 1200 degrees heat paint white, after cleaning that brick with BBQ and oven cleaner. I think it looks really well with the gas logs, the top bar of the original screen, 1965 I assume. We thought it was chrome. We had a brash refurbishing kit. I started with just using the steel wool pad and the black and decker mouse. Almost instintly realized it was brass and binge. Thanks for all of the help!!
