Electrical for future spa?
OK...I went to home depot, and they directied me to the 6/3 wire to run. I want to run the wire now, even though I haven't picked out a spa. They suggested 6/3 since it will pull 60 amps...figured that souunds reasonable. Should I also pull a 12/2 just in case I need additional power for anything? I am finishing my basement so I would like to pull everyhing before I put up the walls.
I will post this the next question in electrial as well...but does anyone know if it's ok to install the wires to the panel, but not install a breaker? I would think that would be ok.
Thanks.

Hello: bverdon
Your question pertains to the electrical connections required for the proposed installation of a spa. Therefore, I moved your question into the electrical forum.
I'm sure the professionals in this forum will be able to help. Also aware you mentioned posting this thread into the spa forum too.

bverdon, The electrical requirements of spa's vary, but most are 220 / 50 or 60 amp. When I ran the electrical for mine, I ran 4 #6 gauge THWN wires in 1" conduit from my panel as well as 3 #12 gauge wires to power some outdoor lights and recepticles. The spa will need to be wired to an outdoor disconnect...I used a 60-amp air conditioner disconnect. They also make spa panels, which look like a sub-panel and already have a gfci breaker installed and 3 or 4 available breaker slots for additional circuits.
I think it's around $100 at HD or Lowes. There are several other codes involved...the disconnect should be no closer than 5-feet and no further than 10-feet, the spa must be on a gfci breaker, etc. Of course your codes may vary. Peter

what they try to explain to you about 6-3 wires :
6-3 mean 3 conducters (wires) with size #6 there
the color will show like this : Black , Red , White that 3 means ok the other wire will useally included is bare ground wire i think it is #8 bare if i recall it right .
that how it call 4 wire set up
________
XXXXXXXX )======= < bare wire
XXXXXXXX )======= < black wire
XXXXXXXX )======= < red wire
XXXXXXXX )======= < white wire
________)
ok #6 wire is rated for 60 amp
the grounding wire serve for grounding useage to prevent some electric shock. bear in mind most spa required both 120 and 240 volts to run it. ( please check your local codes they are pretty fussy with it )
i hope it is work out clear here
merci, marc

So...I bought 6/3 WG...but I think someone referred to it as 6/4...that's where the confusion was.
Thanks.
