Between the basin and the commode is the vent pipe that goes out thru the ceiling. Can I take this vent out or ommit it? The pipe has been placed in a partition between the two and I want to take the partition out but then the pipe would be exposed and I would still have to box it back in. I am suspecting the vent has a purpose but would like to know the ramifications for removing it. Thanks Much!! | 10-27-09, 08:50 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Central NJ Posts: 1,054 | | | You certainly need that vent. Vents allow sewer gases to escape through the roof without bubbling into the living space. They also allow air to equalize and keep the traps full of water. You may be able to relocate the pipe in an adjoining wall, but you certainly don't want to remove it completely. If you can post a picture or two, I'm sure someone here can help you with options. | 10-28-09, 10:35 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: alabama Posts: 5 | | | Thanks for the reply. I was afraid of that. :) The reason I took the partition out to begin with is I needed 1 1/2 inches for the new vanity top to fit. (Tried to put photos on here but I do not have them on a website where I can get to the url. Will not let me paste them here.) I thought about trying to move this pipe inside where the cabinet area will be and then run it out thru the wall horizontally and put a cap on the side of the mobile home. Do not know if the heighth of the original pipe has anything to do with its' functionality. Thanks for any further suggestions. | 10-29-09, 08:20 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: alabama Posts: 5 | | | Bump. Still looking for an answer on this. The IRC allows horizontal vent terminations; the UPC requires all vents to go up through the roof. | 10-29-09, 09:17 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: alabama Posts: 5 | | | Thanks for the reply. This is in a rural area where there are really no codes. So the functionality of the vent would work the same going horizontally out the wall as long as it is above the traps? Thanks again! | 10-30-09, 09:01 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Dec 2003 Location: Harpers Ferry, WV Posts: 758 | | | Yes. But if you go horizontal, I wouldn't terminate it under a window. | 10-30-09, 11:12 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: Hamilton County, Ohio Posts: 2,197 | | | I agree with md2lgyk. Remember that the vent is a direct link between your sewer / septic system and the open end of the vent pipe. That is why they put them above the roof. Also, part of the stink is methane gas and potentially flammable. | 11-03-09, 06:50 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: alabama Posts: 5 | | | Thanks much guys for your input!!
