rustproof can opener, is there such a thing?

2 years go i paid a bit less than 10 bucks for a can opener at my local warehouse club. worked great for a while but the past few months it gets more and more difficult to open and close. The pivot apparently is rusting.

Id expect the teeth etc to maybe rust but why the pivot? I never put it in the dishwasher and rinse it off after every use so no food is left on it.

Hand or electric?

I have always used hand can openers and one brand.Swing-Away.These have been around for many years.they will rust but it is very minor if at all.I have the same one I've used for 20 years and when my Mother died she had one that must have been at least 30 years old which I now have and it works like a charm.

i only use manual..and i just dont get why i need 2 hands to open the darn thing after just 2 years..it's nuts that it's that rusted..are you supposed to oil these or something? I would think not since you have food so close. And the teeth are starting to rust a bit but we all need extra iron in our diets, right?

Look for the Swing Away brand.Mine are so loose you can throw them around like a set of numchucks (however you spell it).If you can't find them go to an Ace Hardware and if they don't stock it they can order one for you.

Yes I would not use lubricants on a can opener other than vegetable or mineral oil which won't last.

on a whim i let some olive oil on the pivot over night, moves very freely now. Who woulda thunk? But the gears are starting to rust a tad so eventually will need replaced. Or maybe it's dirt lol....maybe ill toss it in the dishwasher, nothing to lose

Any oil will lube but olive oil won't last and will wash away in the dishwasher.In fact any food safe oil won't stand up to washing.
