Kenmore dishwasher died

I purchased a Kenmore Model 665.13844K601 dishwasher in January 2008. Recently the motor started getting louder, but the dishwasher continued to run. the other day it was running and I heard a loud humming sound. I shut off the dishwasher and tried restarting it. It looks like it never fininshed the cycle, as soap is still in the tray. Any ideas? This dishwasher is only 18 months old!

died as in totally dead? or as in the pump won't run?

If totally dead

check the connection box underneath for bad connection[s]
check the door switch
look around for a fuse orthermal limiter feeding power to the panel
check the power going to the panel

If the motor is not running

check the voltage to the motor
take the chopper assembly apart and look for something stuck in there
try rotating the motor shaft to see if the bearings froze
look underneath for evidence of leaking at the top of the pump [bad seal]

When you tried to restart it, what happend? You never said!

If it did run, but then you are uncertain about the symptom of why the soap is still in the tray - what can you tell us about the water action in the machine? Like, does it fill? - and does it get to any sort of depth(it's normal depth), so that either the water level is extremely low, causing the pump to cavitate, or that there is debris clogging down below the screen at the bottom of the tub?

The other day I got called to a machine that was whistling, and not filling with water, and the soap dish was open, and soap was caked in the holder, and also had run down the inside of the door, and no water was going in the machine! I played with the drain pump lever rod and inspected the drainpump solenoid, and checked the current to the fill valve solenoid, and just then it went form 0 to 120v while I was here and had my multitester on it, and then filled with water and ran like normal (I have "the midas touch", many tenants think), and no whistle. All was well, except the pump started leaking. We picked up a new dishwsher and I have to install it in a couple days. The machine is like 20-some years old/original to the house.

I had this happen to my Kenmore dishwasher and it was about 15 months old, should have bought the extended warranty. Anyhow, the motor started running rough and then one day it barely run and then couldn't drain the water. That happened earlier this year. I looked under the dishwasher and the motor was corroded and rusty. Looks like the sealed had failed. Ordered a new motor and O rings and it was pretty easy install.

It's actually a somewhat common failure on those. The seal fails and water gets into the bearing. People get really po'd when they have to spend $$$$$ to repair a fairly new dishwasher.

We had a compressor fail on a nice fridge at 4 years, 11 months age, and it was warranted for 5 years. Whew!
