Foundation

Start with your local building inspector's office where the building permits are issued. Regardless of what we say here, the local inspector has the last word on what is required.

Planning your addition

Hi Sheila,
You can have fun doing the addition or you can get frustrated and totally hate it. First off is I live in Minnesota and we are required to pull building permits. Our code is 1300.020 Permits Required. Go to your local city's website and check for any hand outs they may have. Some lumber yards have designers that can do your drawings and sometimes if you purchase from that lumber yard they won't charge for the drawings. I don't know what you'll have in your addition but here is what I would do. Make a list of all the contractors you think you would need. Out of this list who require permits. Electricians, Plumbers, heating and air conditioning and of course your building permit. Lots of luck!!
