finding info. on a 529 account-

Hello- I am divorced, with an 18 year-old daughter from that marriage who is starting college. Our daughter has a 529 that was started many years ago by someone on my ex's side of the family. He (the ex) has not been forthcoming with info. about this 529. Is there an easy way for my daughter to find out the particulars of this account, since she is 18 and no longer a minor? Unfortunately we do not know what financial group holds the 529. She did a credit report and nothing showed up there. Thanks for your help! Jec

I'm not terribly well versed in 529 plans. I do believe that the plan would not be in your daughters name. She would merely be the beneficiary of the account. The beneficiary can be changed at any time. So I wouldn't think that any claim could be made by her for the money. At best, you could get in touch with the person that opened the account and find out if they still want her to benefit from the proceeds.
