I want to replace a chain link gate with a pressure treated wood gate to match my wood fence that runs around 3/4 of my property. I decided not to replace the last run of chain link fence with wood fence since it butts up against my narrow dirveway this past summer. I would like to fabricate a dual swinging driveway gate preferably made out of wood as stated above. Would the two metal chain link posts which are already concreted into in my drive be able to separately support two 5 foot wide wood gates which are going to be the same height as the existing chain link fence? | 01-11-08, 03:02 PM | | Topic Moderator | | Join Date: Mar 2000 Location: Arlington, WA Posts: 9,375 | | | arsenal21, You already have the metal frames for the chain link gates. Use them and simply attach the wood fence boards to them, after you remove the chain link fabric. Those frames won't sag like wood will, and they won't rot. Using the existing posts can be doable, but you'll probably have to put wheels under the gates at the latch ends to support the extra weight of the wood. Since this is over a driveway, the wheels won't be a problem. | 01-14-08, 10:20 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Jan 2007 Posts: 3 | | Quote: Originally Posted by lefty arsenal21, You already have the metal frames for the chain link gates. I just got to wait until the weather gets warmer then I will tackel this new project of mine. | 01-28-08, 04:36 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: all Posts: 2 | | | Wooden Gate with Chain Link Fence Quote: Originally Posted by arsenal21 Lefty, That's exactly what I was thinking. Wood while seemingly a very strong material, is subject to shrinkage, cracking and warping over time (That is no matter how well it is constructed and braced). So while even if built right, a gate built with wood has a relative short life. Also, the chainlink frame that was suggested by another person will not work well. Hope this is helpful. First, if you'll reread my post carefully, you realize that I suggested using the metal chain link gate frames to build the gates with. I gave up on wood more than 20 years ago! Second, you need to read the post at the beginning of this forum regarding Forum Policy. Advertising is simply not allowed, and your post is advertising. At some point later this evening I'll edit that part out. Don't get mad when it happens. Lefty, The approach to gate building I am presenting is an engineered approach that I believe deserves getting the word out. Yes, I believe in my product as an exciting approach to an age old problem "as you said you gave up on 20 years ago". If I have a sensible approach I believe the approach needs to get out there. Yes this could be construed as advertisement. Thanks Lefty, Tony W Quote: Originally Posted by lefty twhyte, Thanks for the input.
