DVD Connections, getting a better picture

I have a cheap DVD player that has outputs - Component Video (3 RCA Cables + audio), S-Video, and Video out (single Yellow RCA + audio).

I just bought a 37" 780? Hi Def LCD VISIO TV. It has these inputs
HDMI
Component Video
S-Video
Video In
plus the 15 pin video in from a computer

I grabbed some old RCA cords and connected the Component Video from the DVD to the TV but the TV says "No Signal". So I am using the Video Out connector.

The picture is small (only uses part of the TV screen unless I stretch it). I was wondering if it would be worth it to pursue the Component Video connections -- would I get a bigger HD picture? Or would it just be a little bit better? Also is S-Video worth it? Is the picture enough Better than Video Out to warrant going out and buying a cable?

If I bought a DVD player with HDMI outs would the picture be as big as the screen or would it too be smaller?

You are going to need a better cable then just some RCA cables. Either use the HDMI or proper component cables. With using normal RCA's, it's like trying to push a basketball through a straw.

Did you change the TV's input to component when you had the RCA cables hooked up to the DVD's component outputs?

DVD players are standard def, so you'll always wind up stretching the picture to fit the screen. Some will up-res, but you said yours was a cheepo.

BluRay is HD.
