TV volume control is too loud on lowest setting.

I finally got my Sony FD Trinitron Wega TV (KD27FS170) to broadcast in digital. The volume, however, is either non-existent or, one notch up, blasts!! This doesn't happen in analog. I've unplugged the set for 5 minutes, reset it to factory specs, removed the batteries in the remote and turned the set on from the front panel. The TV is connected to an antenna and no other AV devices. No luck. Any suggestions on how to fix the volume problem?

Very kind of you to go to so much trouble, but I am totally lost trying to follow your instructions, beginning with how to access the service adjustment mode. Would it be possible for you to restate the information?

TV volume is too loud on lowest setting.

craftsman_50: Believe it or not, I had bought the repair manual for this TV and was able to find part of your instructions on page 36. Their diagrams helped, but I never would have guessed that my volume problem is what they're talking about.

Anyway, I got as far as the part where it says "Text changes to 'WRITE' and changes colors from green to red." After that, I have no idea of what to do or what I should be looking for on the TV screen. If you can somehow clarify this, it would be terrific.

Thank you again for your help.

If you found the right adjustment after you chage it just hit mute, then enter to write it into memory. Then you can just turn the set off and back on and be alright.
They just mean when you hit "mute" the word "write" should appear on the screen. When you hit enter the "write" should change color to let you know it did go into memory.
So , is it working ok now?

Sorry. I'm still not clear on what to do after "changes colors from green to red" in your instructions. I'm nervous about deleting memory that will screw up the TV completely.

Just make sure you record the original setting so you can change it back if it does not fix the problem and you'll be allright.

SUCCESS!! It worked!! I'm so pleased! Thank you so much for all your patience and help, craftsman_50. Now I can watch digital TV. (If I want to make the volume go a little lower, is that possible? If so, what should I set it to?) How did you know about that service bulletin? What are the odds?

My next ordeal is to figure out how to get my VCR to work in digital. The back has only VHF/UHF jacks and the VCR channel options never showed a decimal point like some of the digital channels have. I'd like to keep this as simple as possible. Think I should just get a digital VCR/DVD unit to transfer tapes I have? Any recommendations? I'm clearly electronically challenged.

I hope I'm not being greedy by asking more questions. Maybe I should post the VCR one separately. Any suggestions would be great.

I do warranty work for some of the major brands so I have acess to thier private websites.
Great! I love a happy ending
On the vcr It's not made for digital, but aslong as your on cable or sat. it will continue to work the same.
On the tv you just lower the # some more.If you go too low just reset the # higher.

Unfortunately, I only have a rooftop antenna. I had been using a converter box to get digital before, but hoped the procedure you suggested would eliminate the need for it. Someone told me I need to use a signal splitter and converter box since VCRs only have analog tuners. I'll try to figure out the hook-up, but I realize I might need to buy something more recent than the VCR. I'd like to keep it simple--just want to record a program while I watch something else, occasionally. Any thoughts on the subject?

Well since you no longer need the converter box for the tv you can use it for the vcr.Just split the antenna output and run 1 side to the tv and the other to the converter box.I would hook up the vcr to the tv using the A/V jacks.Easier than trying to set the tv tuner to recieve just 1 analog channel along with the digital.

Thank you once again, craftsman_50. I'll go to Radio Shack this week for a splitter and bring along the assorted pieces of cable and connectors someone gave me, just in case they're helpful. The A/V cable I've been using is only audio (red and white jacks) so I'll get the kind with a (yellow) video jack, too. Didn't know it would work to connect the VCR and TV that way. Hopefully, I can get everything sorted out nicely. I'll let you know how it goes.

TV volume is too loud on lowest setting.

Well, I think something is missing. I'm unable to pull up the menu for the converter box so I can tune it to the channel I want to record. The TV has 2 antenna jacks, one VHF/UHF and one ATSC. I got a signal splitter and connected one cable from the split to ATSC and the other to the converter box antenna in. The VCR is hooked up to the TV with A/V jacks. It feels like the converter box is out of the loop somehow. Suggestions?

Make certain if you hook the converter box to the vcr using the cable in connection that the vcr channel is set to the output channel of the box.Normally channel 3 or 4 .Remember you must change channels with the box not the vcr.

The only connection to the converter box is to "antenna in" (from the splitter). The box and VCR are set to channel 4, which is the unused channel in this area (channel 3 is NBC). There is no direct connection between the converter box and the VCR. Do I need to connect another cable from "TV out" on the converter box to the VCR "in from antenna?"

Unfortunately, even with that additional cable, all I can do is turn on the VCR and the converter box. I get no menus or anything else from either one. What do you think?

Have you got the a/v jacks out on the vcr going to the a/v in on the tv?

Yes. The back of the TV has 2 audio ports (one white/left and one red/right) and a yellow video port. Same for the VCR. "In" is marked on the TV above all 3 ports and "out" is on the VCR under the video port.

I don't know if you'll see this but maybe it'll be helpful to someone. I finally used another cable to connect VCR antenna out to TV VHF/UHF antenna in and it worked!! Thank you for all your efforts. You were a great help.
