You will get a lot of different opinions on this.
Zone doubling is very effective, especially if you only need a few more zones and the configuration will not likely be altered or expanded.
It makes for a much more complicated head end wiring job, and you have to be very careful in keeping your wiring properly identified.
If you are planning on using smoke/fire zones, then I definitely recommend against it.
Personally, I find the cost of a hardwire expander to be worth my while compared to fussing with the doubling resistors, for most circumstances.
