ground to neutral?

if someone spliced a ground wire into a neutral (behind the walls), how could I tell? This is a two wire home 1954, but one socket has three wires black to hot, white to neutral, and a red to socket box.

You should be able to disconnect the neutral wire for that circuit at the breaker panel, then measure an open circuit from the ground to neutral on that circuit.

Everything on that circuit would need to be unplugged though for the test to be valid.

Continuity testing...

Turn off the circuit breaker for that circuit.

Then you can follow the black wire going to that circuit breaker back to the cable it came from.

And that same cable would also have a white wire. Follow that white wire to where it goes and disconnect it.
