Help with kitchen cupboard handles

I measured the size of the holes on the cupboard above the stove and got 3" so I went and bought all new handles for the cupboards in exactly what i wanted (hit a awesome sale), anyway the ones I put up above the stove fit perfect but realized that the other cupboard handles are a slightly smaller size then what I have now. So I have like a hole in the doors for the hardware that is shorter then the lenght of my new handles.

I realize i would have to slightly lower the holes for the new ones but what do I do to the 1 hole exposed for everyone to see?

Handles have 2 holes to connect to the cupboards so i can screw the top of the handle in the top hole avaliable and make new hole lower for the other screw to go in so that the exposed hole is in between the handle. Need advice how to cover up the extra hole and with what?

In the future, get the handles and measure before drilling holes.

What kind of finish is on the doors; paint or natural?

Both paint and stain can be filled with putty, use colored putty for stained/natural finish - you may need to inter mix a couple of different colors to get it right. When finished take an artist brush to touch up the putty with poly or paint.
Done right it will be hard to see the repair.

The cupboards already had the holes there as i took off the old handles and put new ones on, the problem was that the ones i measured and got the right size for werent the same as the rest in the kitchen (i didnt check to see if all the handles were the same size lol) so i have to drill a new hole now and fill in the other. The doors are painted and i have the paint color. So i need to go now and get a putty (hardware store should know what i need i guess) and fill in the one extra holes then and just paint over the plug part after. Ok i get it, thanks for the help guys. Im learning as I go.

Is it possible to take the handles back and get the same style in a shorter length?

There are also handles available with backplates that will hide holes. If you purchased handles on 3" centers, perhaps you can locate some with 2 1/2" centers. Measure the space between the holes and this will give you the size you need.

No i cant take them back, it was discount sale with no returns but thats ok. I picked up a light color putty and filled a few holes already and just need to finish that and paint over the spots. It doesnt even look noticable with the putty! What a relief, hubby would have had a cow when he got back from work camp next month if he saw that lol.

Trying to get some renovations done while hes gone the winter so that he doesnt have a big honey-do list when he returns and we can spend more family time together. Hes not going to believe how much ive got done and done right..with help from the forum here of course..shhhhhh
