Apparently, it contains a 180-day trial version of the product and some other resource CDs. Either way, it's something free from Microsoft to play around with. Make sure to select the USPS shipping and there will be no charge for the order and no credit card required. Enjoy everyone! Also this: http://microsoft.com/technet/treevie.../cdsampler.asp(but you do need the .net thing for this one(just sign up) get this technet cd, it is free, no s/h charge either. It contains • Updated Service Packs for Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP • Security patches for Windows® 2000 Server and Windows® 98 • Resource Kits • Deployment and planning guides • White papers Now you don't have to download the service packs, and security patches again when formating your computer! A startup page enables you to choose which version of the update you want to install on your computer. The CD also contains both versions of the update files for Office XP Service Pack 1, which was released in December 2001. The Service Pack 1 release is a prerequisite for Service Pack 2. The suite is available on a 30-day trial, so once you install it, the software will note the time and the clock will start running and because the download is 178m, it would be advisable for you to have a fast connection. | 01-31-04, 08:42 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,745 | | | FREE ANTIVIRUS http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm? eTrust EZ Armor Security Suite from Computer Associates, the world's #1 supplier of Internet security software** combines award-winning Antivirus with industrial-strength Firewall protection. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware, including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding more than 50 ways spyware can enter your PC. The worldwide SpyNet™ community plays a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, and updates are automatically downloaded to your PC so you stay up to date. System Requirements: Minimum system requirements for Windows AntiSpyware (Beta): Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher A 300 MHz or faster processor with at least 64 MB of RAM Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server™ 2003 At least 10 MB of available free space on your hard disk Internet access with at least a 28.8 Kbps connection to use SpyNet™ | 03-04-05, 07:37 AM | | | Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 I have been using this for almost a month without problems! You can download a trial version and use it for free. You will get periodic requests to register but other than that no big deal. I went ahead and purchased a copy just because I thought it was worth it - $49 I believe. That's for the whole suite which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, a Powerpoint-type program, a database manager, email program, accounting software, etc., etc. I have primarily used the word processor and spreadsheet program and have had no problems with them whatsoever. The files are compatible with MS Office. Here's the link: http://www-easyoffice.com/ If you don't wish to download the software, for a few extra dollars they will send you a CD. They have amazing prices (if an item isn't on sale when you're looking, wait a few days, because they seem to always have great deals going on). They also have GREAT shipping worked out with UPS so "three days" almost always means "three days" (business days, of course). No "three day shipping" that takes 4 or 5 business days to arrive! Great stuff from computer parts (I'd guess 75% of the parts in my computers are from there, if not more) to photography/video gear (purchased my Panasonic GS250 last Christmas from them) to printers and scanners (purchased two of each from them this year!). Another site you can't do without is endpcnoise.com (http://www.endpcnoise.com). Almost all of my fans/heatsinks have been ordered from them in my constant quest to build the quietest computer possible! Free E-mail Client / Browser: --------------------------- And I agree with the poster above, get Thunderbird and Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com) and ditch Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. Your computer will thank you! Free Anti-Virus: --------------- For a free anti-virus solution, I trust all of my machines (along with any of my freelance clients' machines) to AVG Antivirus (http://www.grisoft.com). It's easy to use, supports scanning of incoming/outgoing e-mail (provided you use POP3 for incoming and SMTP for outgoing .. doesn't work with webmail, of course), and supports "resident scanning" (it monitors files you download along with websites you visit for "suspicious" files). I've yet to have a virus and it's never flagged something as bad when it was really ok. Free Office Suite: ----------------- Also for a COMPLETELY free Office Suite, check out OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org). Just as good as Microsoft Office (it can even open MS Office and WordPerfect files among many, many others). My wife used to use MS Office but has on many occasions told me how much she prefers OpenOffice.org because it's easier to figure out how to do things (I would have to agree). Plus, would you rather spend a few hundred of your hard earned bucks on software or a new hardware upgrade? I know which I would chose! Jesse P.S. I am in no way affiliated with any of the above mentioned sites or software programs, just a very, very pleased customer / user of them all! | 02-27-08, 05:53 AM | | Member | | Join Date: Jul 2006 Posts: 8 | | | Registry Cleaners I am wanting to know if there is a good registry cleaner program out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and part of the rear end. I LOVE IT. EZ aromor was worthless when I had it with roadrunner ISP. I have norton free with ATT DSL now. and its not a ton better. Drop IE and run opera for free as a web browser, it is smaller than firefox and safer. | 10-12-08, 03:02 PM | | Member | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: New England Posts: 30 | | OK, Here's a couple that I use Thunderbird as an email client. I also installed the Lightning add-on which gives me a Calendar, Task manager (similar to Outlook, just cleaner and easier to use) Filehippo.com for software out the wazoo. I'm not affiliated with either just a fan - user.
