marble stain

Just spilled a significant amount of pasta sauce on kitchen marble floor. I cleaned and mopped it within 2-3 minutes but a stain remains. Used numerous available solvents including one specifically for marble, but no success.

Any suggestions including possible additional solvents to use would be appreciative.

Any comments on professional cleaners would also be appreciated, specifically, if we wait to get it professional clean, i.e 1 or 2 years would it be harder to remove stain.

The main article under doityourself.com was not too informative

Thanks in advance

To lift stain from natural stone requires a poultice. The article at Marble - Cleaning Care and Repair | DoItYourself.com provides info on DIY poultice and stain removal methods. The only way to remove stains is to reabsorb them out of stone. You can purchase commercial poultice.

Stone Care International has excellent products for care and maintenance of natural stone, including poultice for lifting stains. Stain Removal Problem Solving at Stone Care International Clean, seal, and polish natural stone with products designated only for natural stone. Keeping stone sealed will minimize staining.

According to Stone Care International:

Common Poultice Method:
  1. Wet the stained area with distilled water. This will isolate the stain and intensify the removal process. (Do not use hot water and do not apply if the air temperature is below 32 degrees.)
  2. If a powder is used, blend the powder and the chemical or water to a thick paste consistency like peanut butter. SCI's Ready To Use Poultice Powders only need to be mixed with water. Apply with a wood spatula.
  3. Apply a layer of about 1/4" thick to the stained area.
*DO NOT SPILL THE POULTICE ON THE UNSTAINED AREA*
  4. Cover the poultice with plastic food wrap and tape the edges down with an easy to remove adhesive. This traps the moisture and prevents the poultice from drying to quickly.
  5. Be sure that the poultice is completely dry before removing the wrap. Proper drying time is 24-48 hours. If the poultice is removed early, the stain may not be removed.
*THE DRYING OF THE POULTICE IS WHAT REMOVES THE STAIN*
  6. When dry, take the wrap off and remove the dry poultice with a wooden spatula. The poultice should now be hard. Rinse the area with plain water.
