cracked air cleaner housing...is it a big deal?

hi

i have a 1995 V8 dodge ram 1500 P/U and i have a big hole/crack in the air cleaner housing which basically lets air into the carb which doesn't pass through the air filter first.

is this a big deal?

should i get a used one from a junkyard or is there an after market product available?

You can try an epoxy available at any auto part store or walmart or meijer and seal it with that. you don't want that dirty air getting into the engine. Or you can just go to a salvage yard and find a replacement for it.

Sure it is a big deal since the air being drawn in is bypassing the element.
I would go to a junk yard. You could patch it but then you have a small risk of your repair going down the intake if it were to fail.

Clean it up real good with spray cleaner and solvent....then....wait for it!.... wait for it.....

that reminds me, a couple years ago at lake texoma we ran into a guy who tried to duct tape the holes in his pontoons, needles to say his boat was run up on the shore with the back down by a bunch due to the water in the logs. to top it off he was trying to pull the boat up with a toyata corrolla in sand, had the car buried up to the door and a lake ranger drove up, ticket for driving on the beach, ticket for littering(beer cans) and probably public drunk. we laughed for days about that one.

I'd be looking at my local U-pull-it junkyards for a suitable replacement.

If you can't find it at a local yard, check out Used Auto Parts | Used Car Parts. Yards from all over the country will email you if they have the part and price is normall mentioned. No clue what shipping on that would cost though. Good luck!!
