We have just bought a house and have discovered that under the various floorings are hardwood floorboards. How do we find out what type of wood they are. Obviously we are very "new" to this. They are in great condition for the most part and we are thinking about restoring them. We will need to lay some more over particle board in an extended area and would like to match what is already there.
Thanks for any welcomed advice.

Visit some local flooring dealers and take a look at the hardwood samples to determine what type of wood was used for your floors.

Particleboard is not a recommended substrate for hardwood installation. 3/4" plywood is preferred.
