I'm refinishing an old wooden dresser. I would like to change the location of the handles and use knobs instead. However, I need to fill in the current holes and drill new holes. What do I use to fill in these holes and how do I use it. A friend suggested cellulose wood filler. If I use this - will you be able to see where the holes once were? Will it pickup the color of the stain? Am I better off just leaving the existing holes and not relocating the knobs? I'm not sure what type of wood the dresser is... Its a very hard and grainy wood. I assume perhaps oak. I will be staining it the wood using minwax red mohagany color.

I wouldn't recommend trying to fill holes and relocate. The filler will be somewhat visible regardless of how well you do the job. Depending on where the present holes are located and where you want to locate the new hardware, a better way would be to use the existing holes, if possible. For instance if you are changing from one-hole knobs to two-hole handles, you could use the exisitng holes as one of the two mount holes required for the new hardware. Another method to hide the existing holes would be to use new handles that had backer plates that could cover the holes up.
