To get the baseboard molding as tight as the original installation, I had to find the studs and nail into them which was a lot of trouble. The original installation seemed to nail them into the drywall. Do they use special nails?
This is the standard molding that comes on most houses and if it's not tight I get a gap along the top edge even after painting. I have gone over it with a little putty to close the gap but it seems like a lot of trouble.

In new construction, an air nailer is used often before paint is applied so the stid location is visible. After applying the base molding the top is caulked to close any opening. Try marking the old nail holes lateral location on the wall as they will be at the studs in most cases. The air nailer with 2"+ finish nails goes fast.
