Hello, I would like to carpet the stairs in my home. What is the proper way to measure a stairway for carpeting?

Carpet should run with the grain running/falling down the steps. Then realize carpet is commonly 12' wide, but does come in 13'6" and 15' wide goods too.
Depending on the style desired on the step. measure just how the carpet will fall or upholstered over the step.
Most waterfall style installations here to code, take 18", buy however wide the step is, per step.
Upholstered, bullnose, cap and band style(different names they are called, depending on region) installation, are 20" each step.
A regular straight up staircase here consists of 15 steps.
So lets use that 15, and lets make them 3'11" wide, and we are going to waterfall them(18" each).
So the carpet is 12' wide. So you can only row cut 3, 3'11" wide runs. So you have 15 divided by 3 = 5 so you must make 5 steps. so 18" is 1'6".
1'6" times 5 = 7'6".
Now that is a tight measurement! So you better get 8' even, to allow for squaring up the carpet, using the stair tool in the gully at the tread and riser 90º ant the back of the tread, and any mess ups :)
