Older homes have the stud or floor joists on 16" centers. 16 inches less the 1.5-inch width of the wooden member is 14.5 inches. Grilles are standardized on even number of inches: 4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20 etc. By now you see that a 14-inch standard grille is the largest width that will fit that construction pattern.

Wallboard and plywood standard size is 4 by 8 foot sheets. That happens to work out nicely. 48 inches divided by 16 is exactly 3. This makes it easy to find a place at the edges of the sheet to secure the plywood or drywall to the wall, ceiling or floor.
