I have a central air sytem (Carrier). Last week the condesor fan motor stopped working. Had a service tech come out and replace the motor. Two days later the system was not able to keep the house cool. The service person came back out and said that the compressor was not pulling well and that it looked like a piston was shot. The system is six years old. The estimate to replace the entire outside unit is $2500. It would be replaced with a Carrier System that comes with a 10 year warranty as compared to a "builder's system" that comes with a five year warranty.

Just looking for a sanity check.

Thanks,

The tech's terminology and explanation does not inspire my confidence. A second opinion is a good idea anyway. Have you ever seen a TV sting operation on home air conditioning repairs? It is frightening. Look for a competence not price in a technician. A high labor charge is a good sign. Low prices for labor are often used as bait so that real money can be made on parts and replacements.

Thanks for the quick reply and the head's up. The terminology was more my interpretation of what he was saying. I was able to inspect the gauge used to monitor the pressure of the refrigerent into the compressor and it was certainly much lower than it should have been.
