copper wire or copper piping?
If it was the wire, shut off power at breaker and repair. You can test the compressor by disconnecting the wires from the three prongs on the side of the compressor. Then using an ohm tester, touch one prong at a time with one lead and put the other onto the compressor itself. You may have to scratch a little paint away to make good contact. If the windings have been burnt up you will get continuity through the tester.
If it was a pipe you could also try the ohm tester, also if the line is close enough to the comp. you could try and smell it.A burnt compressor smells burnt.
Good luck and let us know how this turns out.
