Seems I heard 3-4 yrs ago that certain gas flex hoses were no longer considered safe. The one on my gas range has a grey plastic coating--is that one of them?

Welcome Pat to my Gas Appliances forum and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

If the stove is using natural gas, the answer is yes. Replace the existing flex, any type, with the newest type of stainless steel flex line.

Also required will be the replacement of both adapter ends of the flex line. The adapter ends are the male/female ends the connector attaches to.

In most cases, one end of the connector is attached to a shut-off valve installed on the supply gas feed pipe exiting the wall behind the appliance.

The replacement of this shut-off valve will be required when replacing the existing connector and upgrading to the newest type of stainless steel connector.

The other end of the flex line will be attached to an adapter, installed on the inlet gas pipe of the appliance. This existing adapter must be replaced too. Use the new replacement male/female end adapter that is compatible with the new connector.

The above instructions and suggestions are for natural gas. They may not apply to propane. You did not state which type of fuel your appliance is using, therefore I had to assume natural gas.

An excellent source for the replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store. Parts dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.
