Got this Craftsman 42" mower, 6 sp Man. trans. Wanted to check oil or grease. Removed battery and the only place I can see is a rubber plug in top of trans. Reason being it does not seem to shift as well as expected. Clutch adj. is ok. Does this unit contain an oil or grease?? Dunno who makes the trans for this mower.

Hello darrell!

The trans takes grease. The grease that is installed at the factory usually sticks to the case over time, and the shafts and gears get dry. Buy a bottle of "00" grease, usually available at snapper dealers. This grease is thinner than bearing grease and will help matters.
