This may be the wrong place to post this, and if so please let me know where the right place is but since I'm new here I'm just gonna pow ahead....

I have a set of old metal lockers (think high school) that I picked up at an auction. They are painted avacado green, a very light layer of what looks like regular wall paint (not a special metal paint). The entire house was vintage 1960s so I'm thinking the lockers were probably painted to blend into the basement at about that time.

Is it possible for me to remove just that layer of avacado green paint, without messing up the original finish underneath? Please let me know if you have any ideas.

It might be difficult, but try using a weak solution of paint stripper. Wipe the stripper off quickly (or less time than recommended). The old green wall paint may come off easier than the base coat. The base coat is probably a baked-on enamel. Try first in a non visible area. Good luck.

Most interior house paint is latex (water based). Instead of using the stripper (which might work), I'd suggest either Oops or Goof-off. Both products are designed ot remove dried latex paint.

As Rich mentioned, original paint on the lockers was probably an enamel. Neither of the products listed above will touch that.
