I have a 14.5 hp lawn tractor with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Last week while cutting the grass it died. It runs, but smokes badly and has no power. Seems like it lost all compression. Any thoughts whats wrong would be appreciated. I'm thinking piston rings.

It has probably just blown a head gasket, nothing
too bad.

Is it black smoke, or bluish-white?

Black smoke, it runs (poorly) and dies when I put any load on it.

Black smoke is an indication that the engine is getting too much fuel. Check to be sure your choke isn't sticking shut when you release it. If the choke is working the way it should, then the carburetor likely has problems. Let us know what you find!
