i walked into an unfinished furniture gallery and found the most perfect kitchen island...however...it was unfinished...i need some information on finishing the top of the island...it is wood about 2 inches thick...it is a hard wood, but i can't remember the name...i don't know what the best finish should be to use in a kitchen island...i want to be able to prepare foods on the island...

For a cutting board you want to use mineral oil for the top finish. Any other vegetable based oil will turn rancid over time. Make sure it is regular mineral oil, not light mineral oil. The best place to find it is in the health and beuty aids section of your store, usually in the laxative section.
