i walked into an unfinished furniture gallery and found the most perfect kitchen island...however...it was unfinished...i need some information on finishing the top of the island...it is wood about 2 inches thick...it is a hard wood, but i can't remember the name...i don't know what the best finish should be to use in a kitchen island...i want to be able to prepare foods on the island...

The top was probably maple - that's generally the preference for wood tops.
Food preparation surfaces can be finished with what is termed a 'salad bowl finish'. It's a wipe on varnish that polymerizes within the wood. Good adhesion, good durability, and non toxic.
