We're removing the original wall paper in an 8 year old house. In the areas where the walls were not originally painted, the wallpaper is attached directly to the dry wall. Removing the wallpaper is taking the top layer of the dry wall with it. What should we do now? Before we prime it, should be try to spackle it smooth? Our plan is to paint once we have the walls prepped.

You should apply joint compound to any damaged areas. Then apply a coat of primer/sealer such as Scotch Paint's Draw-Tite, Zinsser's Gardz, Roman's Liquid Drywall, Seal-Krete's waterproofing sealer, or Sherwin Williams' PrepRite 200 or 400. These specific brands were designed to seal and fix damaged drywall. Also, ensure you have 100% of the old wallpaper glue off the wall prior to painting. Paint hates wallpaper paste and will "fisheye" like crazy all over the place unless you have all the adhesive off. Best of luck.
