Original 1967 paneling in our "new" ranch home looks heavy and conflicting with all the other light varnished oak trim. Am I able to paint that paneling & have a nice finish? Any advise, experience?

I just painted the paneling in my 3 season porch. What you have to do is use a good primer like Kills, look for visible cracks and fill in with wood putty and hit it with 2 coats of latex paint. You can use oil too but it is not necessary. Good luck!
