I have owned this set since new (about 1988) and suddenly the picture and sound do not come on. On the front the 'sleep' light is on. According to Sony site, I tried unplugging overnight but that did not reset it. Still no response. Does not respond to remote either. Is it something I can repair, or must use a service? Would cost be more than worth spending on older but otherwise excellent TV? Thanks.

unklmike, Your missing the two numbers after the XBR from the model number. Check the back cover again for those numbers and the date of manufacture.

Freddie, I got the Sony Model No. KV25XBR from the back and that is all there is on that line. Below that is: Sony Trinitron Color TV; the next line: Serial number 2136585. Following that is the AC info and finally the bottom line is: FCC ID: AK896AKV-25XBR. Hope that includes what you need. Thank you, unklmike

unklmike, Their are two things you can check on that television. The H.O.T. (Horizontal Output Transistor) to see if it's shorted, and check for cracked solder joints on the circuit board in the power supply section and flyback transformer section. If you have some electronic servicing background you should not have a problem.

These were the first XBR sets from sony and there is NO suffix behind them
My bet is FBT, thats the problem with most of them
