I'm not sure if I have the right forum or not...
But, I'm filling in some space around the flower garden with some rock. I'm just not sure how to calculate how much rock I will need.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn
It depends on what kind of rock you are using and how you want to measure (buy) it.
If by volume, a cubic yard is a cubic yard regardless of which rock you select - just divide the thickness of the layer you want to put down into 27 cubic feet (1 cu yd) to get the area it will cover (ie: 6" into 27 cu ft = 27/.5 = 54 sq ft coverage; 3" into 27 cu ft = 27/.25 = 108 sq ft; etc)
If you want to order by weight, it becomes a little more complicated. Each type of stone has it's own specific weight, so a ton of one type will cover a different area than a ton of another at the same thickness. Ask at your local quarry or stone supplier - they should be able to tell you how much a cubic yard of a specific stone weighs, then do the calculations in reverse to see how much you will need to cover the area you have (ie: 54 sq ft at 6" = 1 cu yd of stone, if 1 cu yd weighs 1.5 tons & you need to cover 100 square feet: (100/54) x 1.5 = 2.77 tons of stone required; area to be covered divided by coverage from 1 ton of stone multiplied by the weight of a cubic yard of that stone).
