I am repainting my house one room at a time. The old paint has some sort of texturing (possibly from use of a roller); it's mild degree but completely covers the walls. When I patch cracks & nail holes, the spackling spots are smooth after sanding, and they are very noticable against the textured paint. Primer has not affected this for better or worse. Any suggestions for how to proceed? I'm wondering if I have to sand the entire wall each time.

Patching textured walls requires trying to duplicate the look of the existing texture in order to avoid a smooth patch. Was the texture achieved by introducing sand into the paint? Or, was the finish coat textured with a trowel, sponge, dry paint brush, small straw broom? Practice duplicating the texture, using different techniques with compound on a piece of cardboard. Duplicating the texture would tend to be much easier than sanding all the walls smooth.
