I used my veneer dining table to iron some large curtains. Though i had covered the table with 2 think cotton sheets (which i thought was enough protection) the heat and the steam from the iron has printed several large grey patches all over the table. Though i can see through these patches and see the actual grain and colour of the table i cannot get rid of these patches. I have made enquiries and the cost of stripping and recoating is enormous (£200-300). What can i possibly do? I havent tired anything in case i cause more damage.

Don't know if the brand name product I wil mention below is available locally, but most likely it, or something similar is.
First, make a paste of baking soda and water. Using a damp sponge with this mixture, scrub out the grey areas.
Go over the entire table with Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover. This will restore the sheen evenly across the table. Just follow the directions on the can.
