I had a fireplace mantle replaced. They did not stain or paint the mantel before putting it against the wall. I choose to stain the mantle. The gel stain that I choose will not adhere to the caulk that is around the mantle. Is there a good way to get the caulk the same color as the mantle? Is there a good way to remove the caulk that they put on the mantle to restain it? The caulk is rubbery with a yellow tint almost clear. I do not know exactly what type of caulk was used.

Most hardware stores sell a painters putty that comes in a one ounce jar. They're available in various wood tone colors and can be mixed (using mineral oil) to just about any color you want. Be aare that this putty never sets up completely and has no adhesive qualities at all.
Removal of the caulk is something else. Scrape away as best you can with a putty knife. The residue should clean up with rubbing alcohol.
