I finally decided to reupholster my old sofa. I bought the fabric, and hired a local company that I had heard good things about. They've been in business for 30+ years, so I thought they'd know what they were doing. My sofa had a very low back, so, I consulted with them before we decided that my carpenter hubby, could add 2 1/2 inches to the back. The upholsterer said he could easily make new back cushions, a few inches taller than the old ones. When they brought the sofa back, I couldn't believe it- the back cushions looked like seat cushions! They were boxy and flat, almost solid foam. I wish I had taken a photo of them. Anyway, I sent them back, asking for the cushier material like my other furniture had. I should have stopped when he said his supplier didn't have that, but he could stuff it w/ shredded foam. I asked him to use something else. The cushions came back shoter, a little more rounded, but stuffed w/ shredded foam. They're uncomfortable, fall over when you get up, and have little give. They're also spreading out so that the tops of the cushions sag a little in the middle. And, they're not even wide enough- the three of them are about 2-3" narrower than the length of the sofa. You can see spaces between them. They didn't replace the seat cushions, just turned them around, but, I swear that you sink down further than before. I wonder if the deck isn't as good as before? I spent $350 on the fabric, and almost $750 on the job. I don't even want the sofa anymore, even though it's the perfect nap-length, and great fabric. I don't know what to do. Go back to them for repairs again (I have no confidence in them), order the cushion filling myself and have someone else make a new wider cushion (and try to get reimbursed), or ask them for my money back and let them have the sofa? I wish I would have bought a new sofa.

Hi!
Sorry you had poor results with upholstery.
There are several options for correcting yhe cushions. The seat situation was incorrectly handled. You should have had new foam. Cushions break down in the front first;especially if you have a "hard" front edge on the frame,i.e., no spring edge. turning the cushion around might make the front look crisper, but it puts the broken down portion where your weight is, making the seat feel softer.
The reason the backrest cushions look too small is they have to be cut bigger to make a puffy cushion. They obviously just refilled the existing covers with shredded foam. Some of the slumping problem can be corrected by buttoning the cushions, but if they are buttonned too tightly, they will be too firm. If you originally requested puffy cushions, they should redo them, although you might meet them halfway and offer to pay for more fabric if this wasn't your original specification. I would think they charged you enough to make this accomodation.
