I plan to install a new railing in my house. I bought unfinished oak balusters, shoe rail, handrail and newell. I planned to stain it a dark cherry then apply satin polyurethane as a sealer. Do I need to apply a sanding sealer first before I begin staining it? Thanks!

A sanding sealer will inhibit the color depth you're after. I wouldn't use it.
