I have a Sony model mentioned above that has been acting as follows:
We turn set on and always get sound. Sometimes the picture will come right away and then will start fading and flickering out.
Then no picture for a few minutes, then on for a few minutes, then off for an hour or so then finally it will come on and stay on for the rest of the viewing evening 4 hours or more till bedtime.
Sometimes when I'm tired of waiting for the picture to come back on I can go up to the set and give it a few gentle but firm hits with the palm of my hand on the glass of the picture tube or the top of set and it will come back on.

My question is whether the picture tube itself going out and needs replacing versus maybe some particular circuit. THE PIP function went out some years ago for the second time and I have not bothered to get that function repaired. If it is the picture tube does anyone have an idea what the cost would be to replace it?

We really like the set, in that it is the big console, model made of real oak wood, like a piece of furniture. Of course it has to be serviced at our house. I'm not really knowledgeable at fixing the problem, but would sure appreciate some input as to what the costs might be to repair it. Thanks for your help.

thejoneses, After reading your post sounds like your problem is at the crt board(this board is located on the neck of the picture tube) or on the main chassis. If you can smack the cabinet or picture tube to get the picture to return theirs definitely a loose connector plug(s) or cracked solder connection(s) on the crt board or main chassis, so lets not say it's the picture tube just yet. Are you planning on making the repairs yourself? If so, post back with the model number and date of manufacture. This imformation is located on the back cover. Sony always had beautiful wood cabinets when they made floor consoles. Mitsubishi and Zenith also. We might get lucky and fix that PIP problem.
