how can I make a smooth but boring concrete patio more interesting? Can I put some sort of tile on top of the concrete? Perhaps breaking the tile into pieces and making a mosiac? What materials can I use?
Thanks.

You can use many different materials -brick,stone,etc.I wouldn't reccomend brick if you have no experience.Stone,on the other hand allows you a bit more leeway since your not dealing with perfectly straight joints, squaring off, laying out, spacing, etc.Stone allows you to create any pattern you want with a bit of give&take when it comes to the joints. You can also use bluestone but now we're back into square corners.Bluestone is nice and runs every 6 inches starting at 12x12 and gets bigger from there.True measurements on bluestone however are approx.1/4 inch less than what the stone is labeled as.If your going to tackle this yourself I would reccomend stone given the leeway it allows you.Good luck
