Does anyone know where I can get a beam hanger for a 2-2x8 beam? Simpson can "manufacture" them although I have to order them through a distributor. Before I even try to go this route I'd like to see if someone has this as a standard size.

Thanks! :)

They make different size joist hangers, and you should be able to find double 2X8 hangers wherever pressure-treated deck material is sold. (Or they can get them for you.)
Try the Yellow Pages.
Good Luck!

From what I've seen, the double joist hangers are face nailed only, and the actual beam hangers also go over top of the supporting member (in this case another beam 2-2x10). Wouldn't this be much stronger? I'm trying to eliminate a couple of footings if possible. As I was sitting "surveying" after putting my tools up the other day it occurred to me that I could (if I could find the hangers) hang a couple of 2-2x8 beams between the 2-2x10 beams (8< apart) and then hang the joists for what I have planned to be a 10x12 foot "lower" deck from that. My original plan is for both to be "free-standing," not attached to each other or the house. I don't pretend to be an engineer, but it just seems that may not provide the support the beam and that lower deck about would need. Or would it? (the "upper deck" btw, is sitting about 20" off the ground on 6x6s w/12" pier footings)

The Simpson part is LUS28-2. Here's the link to the tables, but I don't have the background to be able to interpret them: Strongtie Link (http://www.strongtie.com/products/FaceMountTables/face_ss-df1.htm)

As always, thanks for the help, guys! :)

what you are talking about as a "beam" hanger is typically used for engineered joists and such.. try a supplier of engineered lumber they will know what you mean from the description. Hope this helps--Josh

Oooohhhh :), that explains the "odd" sizing of the ones I have found then. May have to go back to plan "A". We'll see.

yep youll find them in large sizes like 18 inches deep for I joists. I honestly cant quite follow your beam plans so far but if you are loading a beam close to max capacity.. my advice is to use sandwich construction and put 1/2 cdx between the 2xs. This makes a much stiffer beam at relatively low cost. Hope this helps--Josh

Okay, Josh, here's a real fast "sketch:

http://www.rosehawke.com/Image2.jpg

The red is the 2-2x10 beams that are already up, the green will be joists (none of this is to scale!) the purple is the way I thought I might be able to hang one beam from the others this span is 8' more or less) although it's not shown theother ends of the joists coming from the "purple" beam would be sitting on another beam sitting on conventional footings.

Hope this helps!

i see more clearly now.. pictures always help :)

im assuming the blue things are concrete piers and the point of location where the beam would hang off the 2x10s is relatively close so that seems Aok but im no engineer. However If this was me...

8' span with 2 2-8 is a ways going like i said i would reinforce the beam with 1/2 cdx plywood sandwiched in the middle of the 2 - 2x8s and use loads of 10 d nails in a W shape up and down the beam..

Now heres the catch.. if you make this super strong plywood beam it wont fit in double 2 x8 hangers :( ..but .. im never at a loss for ideas... i say ditch the hangers altogether..

get some thick steel 90 corner bend like the stuff you hang garage doors with but 1/4 thick plate steel..

you would need 8 of these made or obtained locally check around

i would through bolt these to the 2x10s and through the 2x8s with hex head 3/8 or 1/2 bolts and bobs your uncle that beams not going anywhere anytime soon! Hope this helps--Josh

Hmmmmm, this sounds like it might work! I'll see what I can find.

Thanks!
