hello
i want to bulid a free standing deck about a foot high and 12'x12'. is there a site where i can get simple step by step directions rather than going to the library or store?
also, should i take these plans to the building dept in my town/city before buiding? i have the know how to set sonar tubes and hang joist hangars etc. but need some help in putting my abilities into creating this deck.
thanx again

If youve ever read an issue of THe Family Handyman.. they build a deck a week it seems.. seriously If you just want to see the nuts and bolts of 'how" a deck goes together check out some back issues at a local library. they have done a deck very similar to yours last year but i cant keep the issues anymore just too much to store so cant be exact month.
If you just want a rough idea of one way to go about it
set 6 piers -one at each corner of the deck and two at the midspan of what will be your "beams"
use mudsill? type anchors embedded in wet concrete and then nail into your lumber to anchor
use 2 -2x10 with 1/2 cdx plywood between to construct a 12' "beam" you will need 2 such "beams" they will be anchored using the mudsill straps to the concrete piers.
lay out your joist hangers ( theres alot of ways to do this part)
on 16 inch centers
set your beams to the pier and nail in then tack on rim joists and start setting your joists in crown up ( crown is the "arch" part so the weight of the decking pushes it down)
block the midspan @ 6 feet with 2x10 blocking you will precut to 14 1/2 inches by snapping a chalk line and alternating blocks on either side and through nailing.
then screw down your decking material 5/4 or 2x and relax.. you built a deck!
Hope this helps--Josh

do did a fine job of laying out the deck steps, josh. it will really help, thank you.
by the way go to www.deckplans.com for a new and interesting concept-i've been looking into it and it seems quite reasonable. let me know what you think. i 've been asking other pros and builders.
